DR.EV Tesla Repair Toronto, Tesla Model X Horn Not Working? Here’s What Caused It and How We Fixed It

👁️‍🗨️ Overview

Is your Tesla Model X horn not working when you press the button? We recently serviced a Model X with a completely silent horn, even though no dashboard warnings or alerts were showing. This is a common issue caused by a failed horn relay, rusted wire terminals, or a bad fuse.

🔍 Symptoms — What the Customer Noticed

  1. Horn didn’t make any sound

  2. No fault codes or warning lights

  3. Steering wheel buttons worked fine otherwise

  4. Fuse and relay appeared intact during quick inspection

Rust on the horn terminals caused power delivery issues, which made the horn silent.

🧪 Diagnostic Process

Our technicians followed the standard Tesla diagnostic protocol:

  1. Tested horn output directly at the 12V horn terminals

  2. Verified horn activation signal from the steering wheel module

  3. Inspected fuse F231 and relay R9 in the front fuse box

  4. Scoped CAN signal behavior during horn activation

🔧What We Found:

  1. No power reached the horn when the button was pressed

  2. Relay was getting a signal but wasn’t activating

  3. We found light rust on the horn terminals and relay socket

  4. The horn unit itself was OK when tested directly

🛠️ Repair Process – How We Fixed the Horn

  1. Cleaned the rusted horn terminals and surrounding connector pins

  2. Replaced the faulty relay with a new one

  3. Reseated the fuse to ensure good contact

  4. Performed a vehicle power cycle to refresh the system

  5. Tested horn response using both the horn button and service software

Post-Repair Verification – Horn Working Again!

  1. Horn now works every time

  2. No more silent button presses

  3. System has no fault codes, and all electrical paths are clean

  4. Customer left with full confidence in their horn’s reliability
